Tip of the Month: Text Selection Shortcuts

Learn how to maximize your use of the keyboard. Many tasks can be completed without ever picking up the mouse… which reduces wear and tear on your wrist… plus makes your work go so much more quickly!

Try out these text selection shortcuts. They’ll work in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Note: Text selection using the keyboard always uses the SHIFT key.

Moving around on the page

Go to the beginning of the line

HOME

Go to the end of the line

END

Go to the beginning of the document

CTRL+HOME

Go to the end of the document

CTRL+END

 

Selecting text

Select a character to the right of the cursor

SHIFT + right-ARROW

Select a character to the left of the cursor

SHIFT + left-ARROW

Select a word to the right of the cursor

CTRL+ SHIFT + right-ARROW

*Select a word to the left of the cursor

CTRL+ SHIFT + left-ARROW

*Select the rest of the text to the right of the cursor on the line

SHIFT + END

*Select the rest of the text to the left of the cursor on the line

SHIFT + HOME

Select multiple lines below the cursor

SHIFT + down-ARROW

Select multiple lines below the cursor

SHIFT + up-ARROW

Select to the beginning of the document

CTRL+SHIFT+HOME

Select to the end of the document

CTRL+SHIFT+END

Select entire document

CTRL+A
