Below are examples of some of the lessons and tools
I've used in the
classroom. Please make use of them if you feel they would help you, too.

Writers
Workshop
I'm a firm believer that we learn about writing through
reading. I like to introduce my students to a wide variety of literature
through writing units. I build unit plans keeping this in mind.
Here are a
few samples of specific lessons I've taught:
-
Reading
A reading unit on Margie Palatini turned into one
of my favorite units. I used this as a precursor for writing interesting
narratives. Ms. Palatini's use of figurative language provided many
examples. We finished the unit with a Reader's Theater rendition of
Earthquack (which brought the house down!)
My students really enjoyed contributing clues for their favorite
books in order to play

Math
Problem solving can be a
tough thing to learn - so I've animated many of the problems we work
with. It really keeps the interest high - and it shows how breaking
problems into manageable piece parts is a great tool:
Inquiry
is a fabulous way to engage students in learning math. The more we can
involve them in what they're learning, the more it stays with them. Here
is a lesson that taught (on the surface) about story graphs - but led to
the students discovering what slope is all about.
The
Discovering Algebra series is a terrific way to gently lead students
into a solid understanding of algebra. Each unit contains investigations
to explore new concepts. Coupled with additional material from the
Connected Math series, students learned about ratios and probability
with ease.

Science Lessons
Science is such an
excellent way to engage students in the world around them and use all of their
skills - math, reading, and writing. This heat and matter unit will give you an
idea of my approach to teaching science.
